OSP-CP and Open Book

Tucked into the ivy-covered buildings on the campus of the University of Chicago is the Office of Special Programs—College Prep. Students as young as eleven years old can be seen walking across the campus, many of whom may never have thought they'd fit into such a place. While there, the students have access to professors, student volunteers, libraries and computers. They engage in many culturally enriching activities, attend classes in a wide range of subjects and take advantage of academic counseling and test preparation.

Because of its success in the Chicago Public School System, the Open Book Program was used as one of the English components of the Office of Special Programs—College Prep program for the year 2000 summer session. Two classes of adolescents participated in Open Book's broad range of activities that encourage the development of reading writing and critical thinking skills.
